Good height and weight

These hit the sweet spot between the ankle length (not enough protection) and over-the-calf length (way too hard to get off my foot after a race), in my opinion. Also, these seem tough enough without being quite as thick as the non-spartan mudgear socks - a couple races in and so far so good.
